Degenerative Disc Disease (DDD)

Overview

Degenerative Disc Disease describes the natural wear-and-tear process of spinal discs over time. As discs lose hydration and height, nearby joints and nerves may become irritated, leading to stiffness, pain, and reduced mobility.
Though the name sounds severe, DDD is common and can often be managed successfully through movement and exercise.

Signs & Symptoms

- Chronic or intermittent low back pain
- Stiffness that improves with movement but worsens after inactivity
- Occasional radiating discomfort into hips or legs
- Pain that increases with sitting, bending, or twisting
- Muscle fatigue or tightness around the spine

Causes

- Age-related disc dehydration and thinning
- Poor posture or repetitive mechanical stress
- Weak spinal stabilizers and poor movement control
- Previous injury or disc herniation
- Sedentary lifestyle and low activity level

How a Chiropractor Can Help

At Unify Rehab & Performance, we emphasize function over fear—disc degeneration does not automatically mean chronic pain. Our goal is to restore mobility, strength, and confidence through a thorough, evidence-based approach.

Our treatment plan may include:

- Chiropractic adjustments and mobilizations to restore segmental motion and reduce stiffness.
- Soft tissue therapy to relieve muscle tension and improve flexibility.
- Acupuncture to manage pain and inflammation.
- Strength-based rehabilitation: Progressive core and hip strengthening to improve spinal load tolerance.
- Education on posture, movement habits, and exercise for long-term spine health.

Our Unify approach helps you move beyond pain—by rebuilding strength, mobility, and resilience for the long run.
