PIRIFORMIS SYNDROME

Piriformis Syndrome
Overview
Piriformis syndrome occurs when the piriformis muscle (deep in the buttock) irritates or compresses the sciatic nerve, leading to pain that can mimic sciatica.
It’s common in people who sit for long hours or perform repetitive hip rotation activities. The condition often reflects imbalances between hip mobility and stability.
Signs & Symptoms
- Deep aching pain in the buttock
- Pain that radiates down the back of the thigh
- Numbness or tingling in the glute or leg
- Pain after prolonged sitting, running, or climbing stairs
- Tightness or weakness around the hip
Causes
- Prolonged sitting or sedentary habits
- Weak glutes or overactive hip rotators
- Poor movement control during squats or running
- Muscle imbalance between left and right hips
- Postural asymmetry or pelvic misalignment
How a Chiropractor Can Help
At Unify Rehab & Performance, we start with a comprehensive assessment to distinguish true piriformis syndrome from lumbar nerve root irritation.
Our treatment includes:
- Manual therapy and adjustments for the pelvis and lumbar spine.
- Soft tissue therapy to release the piriformis and surrounding muscles.
- Acupuncture to relieve nerve irritation and improve muscle relaxation.
- Rehabilitation focusing on glute activation, hip mobility, and movement retraining.
- Education on posture, sitting habits, and stretching strategies.
Our strength-based approach not only relieves pain but corrects the movement dysfunctions that caused it—helping prevent recurrence.
