Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis)

Overview

Tennis elbow, or lateral epicondylitis, is a common overuse injury involving inflammation or degeneration of the tendons on the outer side of the elbow.
Despite its name, it often affects non-athletes — especially individuals who perform repetitive gripping, lifting, or computer work. The condition results from microtears in the extensor tendons where they attach to the lateral epicondyle.

Signs & Symptoms

- Pain or tenderness on the outer (lateral) side of the elbow
- Pain with gripping, lifting, or twisting motions (e.g. opening a jar)
- Weak grip strength
- Stiffness or aching after activity
- Discomfort that may radiate down the forearm

Causes

- Repetitive wrist extension and gripping movements
- Poor forearm or shoulder strength
- Improper technique in sports or lifting
- Poor ergonomics at work (keyboard/mouse use)
- Inadequate recovery between repetitive tasks
