SHOULDER IMPINGEMENT

Shoulder Impingement
Overview
Shoulder impingement occurs when the tendons of the rotator cuff become compressed between the bones of the shoulder during movement—most commonly under the acromion.
It often affects individuals who perform repetitive overhead activities, such as lifting, throwing, or desk work with poor posture. Over time, this compression can lead to inflammation, pain, and limited range of motion.
Signs & Symptoms
- Pain when lifting the arm overhead or reaching behind the back
- Sharp or pinching sensation in the shoulder joint
- Weakness or fatigue with overhead tasks
- Stiffness or catching sensation during movement
- Night pain when lying on the affected side
Causes
- Repetitive overhead movements (sports, weightlifting, manual work)
- Poor posture and forward shoulder position
- Weak rotator cuff and scapular stabilizers
- Tight chest and shoulder muscles
- Structural narrowing of the subacromial space
- Previous shoulder injury or instability
How a Chiropractor Can Help
At Unify Rehab & Performance, we begin with a comprehensive shoulder and postural assessment to identify the exact cause of your impingement.
Our treatment approach may include:
- Chiropractic adjustments and mobilizations for the shoulder and upper back to restore optimal mechanics.
- Soft tissue therapy for tight rotator cuff, pec, and scapular muscles.
- Acupuncture to reduce inflammation and improve tissue recovery.
- Progressive rehab focused on rotator cuff strengthening, scapular control, and mobility drills.
- Education on posture, training modifications, and load management.
Our goal is not just to relieve pain but to restore movement confidence, shoulder strength, and long-term resilience.
