THORACIC OUTLET SYNDROME

Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS)
Overview
Thoracic Outlet Syndrome occurs when nerves or blood vessels are compressed between the neck, collarbone, and first rib. This can result from poor posture, muscle tightness, or repetitive upper-limb activity.
TOS often causes arm pain, numbness, or weakness and may mimic cervical or shoulder conditions if not properly assessed.
Signs & Symptoms
- Numbness, tingling, or pain in the arm, hand, or fingers
- Weakness or fatigue with overhead activity
- Swelling or discoloration in the arm (vascular form)
- Neck, shoulder, or chest tightness
- Heaviness in the arm after repetitive use or carrying loads
Causes
- Forward head posture and rounded shoulders
- Tight scalene or pectoral muscles compressing nerves/vessels
- Repetitive overhead activities (e.g., painting, lifting, sports)
- Anatomical variations (e.g., cervical rib)
- Previous neck or shoulder injury
How a Chiropractor Can Help
At Unify Rehab & Performance, we conduct a comprehensive assessment of posture, muscle tension, and movement to identify the exact site of compression.
Treatment may include:
- Manual therapy and mobilizations for the neck, first rib, and shoulder complex.
- Soft tissue therapy to release the scalene, pectoralis minor, and surrounding muscles.
- Acupuncture to decrease pain, improve circulation, and reduce muscle tone.
- Rehabilitation: posture correction, mobility drills, and progressive strengthening of scapular stabilizers and upper back.
- Education on workstation setup, exercise form, and self-management strategies.
Our Unify approach addresses both the cause and contributing movement patterns, helping restore normal function and prevent symptom recurrence.
