SHOULDER INSTABILITY

Shoulder Instability
Overview
Shoulder instability occurs when the structures that stabilize the shoulder joint—such as the capsule, labrum, or surrounding muscles—become stretched or weakened.
It may follow an acute dislocation, repetitive overhead activity, or generalized ligament laxity. Instability can lead to pain, clicking, or a feeling that the shoulder might “slip out.”
Signs & Symptoms
- Recurrent shoulder dislocations or subluxations
- Pain or apprehension during overhead or throwing motions
- Weakness or fatigue in the shoulder
- Clicking, popping, or shifting sensation
- Reduced confidence when lifting or training
Causes
- Traumatic dislocation (sports or falls)
- Repetitive overhead movement (swimming, volleyball, baseball)
- Congenital joint laxity
- Weakness of rotator cuff or scapular stabilizers
- Poor rehabilitation after previous injury
How a Chiropractor Can Help
At Unify Rehab & Performance, we begin with a comprehensive shoulder stability and motor control assessment to determine which structures are compromised and how they affect your movement.
Treatment typically includes:
- Manual therapy and adjustments for shoulder and thoracic alignment.
- Soft tissue therapy for overactive or tight compensatory muscles.
- Acupuncture to reduce pain and promote healing.
- Targeted strength and stability rehab for rotator cuff and scapular control.
- Education on movement mechanics, load tolerance, and sport-specific return-to-play guidance.
Our focus is to rebuild shoulder stability, confidence, and control—so you can move freely without fear of reinjury.
