Peroneal Tendinopathy

Overview

Peroneal tendinopathy involves irritation or overuse of the tendons that run along the outer ankle and foot.
It’s often seen in runners, athletes who train on uneven surfaces, or individuals with chronic ankle instability.

Signs & Symptoms

- Pain or tenderness on the outside of the ankle
- Swelling or warmth near the peroneal tendons
- Pain with walking, running, or side-to-side movement
- Weakness or instability in the ankle
- Popping sensation during movement (in some cases)

Causes

- Repetitive ankle motion or excessive pronation
- Weak ankle stabilizers and glutes
- Prior ankle sprain or instability
- Tight calf muscles or restricted mobility
- Sudden increase in activity or training load
