Sciatica
Overview
Sciatica refers to irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower spine down through the buttocks and legs. It’s not a diagnosis itself, but a symptom of an underlying condition such as a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or muscular entrapment (e.g., piriformis syndrome).
It can cause radiating leg pain, numbness, or weakness that limits walking, sitting, and daily function.
Signs & Symptoms
- Sharp, burning, or shooting pain down the leg
- Numbness, tingling, or “pins and needles” sensation
- Muscle weakness in the leg or foot
- Pain that worsens with sitting or bending
- Discomfort when coughing or sneezing
- Usually affects one side of the body
Causes
- Herniated or bulging disc pressing on spinal nerves
- Spinal joint restriction or degenerative changes
- Piriformis muscle tightness compressing the sciatic nerve
- Poor posture and weak glute/core muscles
- Sedentary lifestyle or prolonged sitting
