Gluteal Tendinopathy

Overview

Gluteal tendinopathy is irritation or degeneration of the tendons that attach the gluteal muscles (mainly gluteus medius and minimus) to the hip bone.
It’s a leading cause of lateral hip pain and is often aggravated by walking, running, or lying on the affected side. While it’s common in active adults and older individuals, poor hip control and weak glutes are usually the root causes.

Signs & Symptoms

- Pain on the outside of the hip or buttock
- Discomfort when lying on one side
- Pain when walking, climbing stairs, or standing on one leg
- Stiffness or aching after sitting or sleeping
- Weakness or fatigue in the hip muscles

Causes

- Weak gluteal or hip stabilizer muscles
- Repetitive stress from walking or running
- Poor pelvic control or hip alignment
- Tight iliotibial (IT) band or TFL muscles
- Overuse or improper training progression

How a Chiropractor Can Help

At Unify Rehab & Performance, we perform a detailed strength and movement analysis to identify mechanical factors contributing to tendon overload.

Our treatment plan may include:

- Chiropractic mobilizations for the hip, pelvis, and lumbar spine.
- Soft tissue therapy targeting the glutes, IT band, and TFL.
- Acupuncture to reduce pain and promote healing.
- Progressive rehab focusing on hip abductor strength, load tolerance, and gait retraining.
- Education on training modifications, sleep positioning, and posture.

Our goal is to help you not only relieve hip pain but rebuild strength and confidence in movement for lasting results.
